HPV (human papillomavirus) is something that many people did not know much about until recently. With new preventative measures hitting the scene, there is much more awareness about HPV. Prevention is becoming a topic of conversation and awareness is one of the best methods in preventing the cancer that can appear with a diagnosis of high risk HPV.
There are over 100 types of HPV and many of them cause no symptoms, so-called asymptomatic form. There are around 30 types that are sexually transmitted and this is where the risk lies. Amongst these 30 that are sexually transmitted, there are then high-risk types and low risk types. The one that is most troubling is the high risk or oncogenic and these are the ones that can lead to cervical changes and cancer.
The number one way to become infected with HPV is through sexual contact. This often means vaginal or anal sexual contact. HPV is often not transmitted through oral sexual contact. Warts are sometimes seen with HPV and this is often the low risk type of HPV. With the low risk, the body often eradicates the virus and this can happen in up to 90% of people.
Some people do not show any signs or symptoms and this is a troubling fact about HPV. Almost half of women will have no signs or symptoms even though they are positive for HPV. Genital warts can appear and this can start as a bump in the genital area that does not go away. Genital warts can appear on the outside or the inside of the vagina in women and on the penis for men.
A doctor can generally treat warts and there are several different treatment options to help remove, including surgical removal, any warts that are uncomfortable. Sometimes HPV in women, the cells of the cervix can change. This is the type of HPV that can create the most problems in women and when the cells change, cancer can be the diagnosis. Emotional problems can also be a major problem with a diagnosis of HPV.
Gardasil is something that many people have heard about. This is a vaccine that is given to younger girls and women. This can prevent 2 high-risk forms of HPV and 2 low risk forms that can cause warts. This is not a full preventative and routine screenings for young women with a gynecologist is still recommended.
Knowing the risk factors for HPV can help with prevention also. A diagnosis of HPV is often a very emotional time for many women. There is a lot more knowledge about HPV and this has led to some major breakthroughs in treatment.
